There is more to crayons that coloring. If you have kids at home, you can easily find broken crayons littering the child’s room. Instead of discarding the unwanted crayons, reuse them for making stunning items. Old and broken crayons are popular materials for DIY crafts. From creating lipsticks to candles, there are different ways of repurposing them.
Here is a collection of some interesting things you can create with crayons.
Colorful Block Candles
To make stunning colorful homemade candles, melt a small amount of wax. Position a candle wick at the center of a votive and pour a thin layer of molten wax on the center. Allow the wax to harden. Add wax to a paper cup and put the broken candle pieces on top of the wax. Heat the paper cup in a microwave oven for about 2 minutes. Stir the mixture and again microwave for two more minutes. Pour the colored wax into the votive. Leave the colored wax layer to harden. Similarly melt another crayon of a different color and wax and pour the colored wax over the first layer. In this manner create different layers of colored wax and you will get a beautiful homemade candle.
The DIY crayon shapes can be used as cheap party favors for children. You can also use them for creating interesting children room decors. This is a fun DIY project. Break the old crayons into small pieces. Fill silicone molds of different shapes with the small crayon pieces. Place the tray in a preheated oven and heat until all the crayons have melted. Remove the tray from the oven and leave it outside for the wax to harden. You can even refrigerate the tray. After the crayon pieces harden, turn the tray upside down and the shapes will come out easily from the molds.
Crayon Batik Fabric
With a pencil draw any scene or pattern of your choice on a piece of fabric. Melt the crayons. Place the fabric on an aluminum foil and with coloring brush color the fabric with melted crayon. After you have finished covering the fabric with crayon, wrinkle the fabric. Spray black dye on the wax and allow it to set. Now place the fabric between two newspapers and iron the wax.
Instead of buying an expensive lipstick, you can make your own lipsticks with crayons. Choose your preferred color shade. You can use a single color or mix several crayon colors. In a large metal ladle, mix olive or coconut oil and shea butter. Add pieces of crayons. Heat the ladle. Stir the ingredients so that they mix well. After the crayons have melted and the ingredients have blended thoroughly, remove the ladle. If you want to add glitter to your lipstick, you can add some glitter to the ladle and mix the ingredients. Cool and refrigerate the mixture. Your crayon lipstick is now ready for use.
Melted Crayon Modern Art
Here is an interesting idea for reusing old crayons for creating art works. Glue crayons on a canvas board to form patterns of your choice. Place the canvas in a vertical position and with a hair dryer start heating the crayons. When the crayons melt, rotate the board carefully to create different interesting patterns. After the artwork is dry you will get a beautiful crayon art that you can hang on the wall.
Crayon Rock Paperweight
For this project you will need some flat and smooth rocks. Place the rocks on a cookie sheet and heat them in an oven for about 15 minutes. Carefully remove the rocks and color them with crayons. The heat will melt the wax and you will get colorful patterns on the rocks.
