Flies- Whoever kept the name to them have certainly got it wrong. No matter what we do, they never seem to fly away from our surroundings. They seem to follow us everywhere and unfortunately, we have to deal with them for a good part of our lives. House flies have a small life average of around 6 days but in spite of that, they can reproduce in hundreds. They are the carriers of a number of diseases and they thrive on places such as dumps, garbage, and filth. The biggest irony is that house flies themselves are one of the cleanest insects. They constantly rub their tentacles against their bodies getting rid of the muck and dirt that have accumulated on them. As a result, they tend to drop in their grime everywhere including our foods. This is one of the important reasons why they transmit a huge list of diseases. In many parts of the world, house flies are known to transmit more than 50 types of infections and diseases including cholera, typhoid, dysentery and much more. House flies are a menace and they have to be eradicated completely from your home. You can very well use some over the counter chemical products to limit them or you can safely use some homemade remedies to get rid of them. Let us look at the best ways to safely contain the house flies.
5 Things You Should Try To Get Rid Of Flies:
1. Use Homemade Fly Traps:
This is one of the easiest and efficient methods to trap flies. The best part is that it can be reused many times and they are easy to make. To make this trap cut off the top of a plastic bottle. Later fill it with water and add a piece of rotten fruit into it. Now put the top of the bottle upside down into it – like a funnel. Place this in the area where you see a fly infestation. The flies get attracted to the fruit and get into the bottle, but they would be unable to come out and drown in the water. Later discard the water and fruit and replace it with a fresh one.
2. Use Cloves:
Cloves are an excellent ingredient when you cook and have a raw aromatic smell. This smell can act as a deterrent against the flies and keeps them away. Use them best with lemons for added results. Crush some 8 to 10 cloves into a fine powder and mix with 4 tablespoons of lemon juice. Transfer them into a spray bottle and spray it in the places where you see the flies. Alternately you can dry out some cloves and put them in small muslin bags. Then tie these bags in the places which are infested with flies. The flies will not come near these bags.
3. Use Basil:
Have you noticed that usually insects, especially flies do not come near a basil plant? That is because basil has a nice rich fragrance that seems to deter flies at all levels. Grow them in your garden on near your windows. Alternatively, you can dry out a handful of basil leaves and add in a few drops of lavender essential oil to them. Now put them in a muslin cloth or paper cloth and tie them near your window slits or near the entrances. You can also add in a mix of other herbs like mint, eucalyptus etc. The house flies will never cross these bags to come into your house. These cloth bags can also come for a long duration.
4. Use Lemongrass Oil:
If you have a heavy fly infestation and if you do not want to go for chemical based products then go for lemon grass oil without any hesitation. They work efficiently as a natural insecticide and can eliminate the flies problem for you. It is also safe even when you have kids at your home. To make them, boil half a cup of water and add in about 20 drops of lemongrass oil. Let it cool and transfer it to a spray bottle. Shake well and use them in the places where you notice them. You can even put a few drops in a diffuser and put them in your rooms too. You can even use camphor essential oil alternatively.
5. Use Plastic Water Bags:
Nobody knows why this method works, but this is one of the quirkiest methods by which the fly menace can be kept under control. The method works on the basis of the eye structure of a fly. Fill in a plastic bag with water halfway. Put some shiny objects in it like coins or pins. Now tie this bag near your entrances. The flies have an aversion towards such bags and they take the plastic bags to be that of a spider’s web and avoid them. Also, the presence of the shiny objects put across a reflection in the water and this deters the flies from entering your premises. Try it out the next time.
