We all wash our pillow cases and bed covers once in a while, but seldom bother about the mattress. But, did you know that the mattress can be host to dust mites and other microorganisms which can cause health problems? Dust mites can cause allergic reactions and even asthma is some people.
The mattress also bears the brunt of children who don’t think twice about spilling juice on it while playing. Vacuuming your mattress regularly is a good option to get rid of dust mites, but it doesn’t offer any guarantee against germs or foul odor. There is a very simple way to clean and freshen up the mattress and eliminate any dust mites or germs that might be dwelling in it.
Things You Need:
You will need a cup of baking soda, a sieve, your favorite essential oil and a vacuum cleaner to clean your mattress. The quantity of baking soda depends on the size of your mattress. While choosing essential oil, choose with its properties in mind. Very strong scented oils may disturb your sleep while oils like lavender essential oil will soothe your senses and induce sleep.
Remove The Bed Covers:
Remove all the bed covers and pillowcases and give them a good wash. Like the mattress our bed sheets are also home to all kinds of dirt and germs. It makes no sense in cleaning your mattress and using unclean bed sheets again.
Mix The Ingredients:
Take one cup of baking soda in a mason jar and add a few drops of essential oil to it. Shake well and keep it ready for use. Using lavender essential oil is very beneficial as it has calming properties which will help you fall asleep.
Sprinkle On The Mattress:
Now, sprinkle the baking soda mixture liberally on the mattress using a sieve. Leave it on for about an hour so that the baking soda absorbs the moisture and foul smell from the mattress. The baking soda will effectively clean and deodorize the mattress.
Vacuum The Mattress:
Vacuum the mattress thoroughly to remove the baking soda and any dirt lingering in the mattress. Once vacuumed, your mattress will look and feel fresh.
